Ad Competition Index
76.5/ 100
Sitting at rank 136 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 47 of the 400 markets we cover. More local businesses chasing the same searches pushes the score up. See the method
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (such as lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for its residents. Salt Lake County scores 76.5, which is more crowded than most.
Two features set Salt Lake County apart from the pack: it is a high-income county, and it is a county with an unusually high share of bigger (20+ employee) businesses in ad-heavy categories. Below, eight measures set it beside every other county.
The bars place Salt Lake County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Where people live
The Census Bureau's latest estimates, by place. These are not service areas, but they show where the biggest groups of customers are.
| Place name | Residents (2023 estimate) | Slice of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Salt Lake City | 209,593 | 18% |
| West Valley City | 134,470 | 11% |
| West Jordan | 114,908 | 10% |
| Sandy | 91,943 | 8% |
| South Jordan | 84,528 | 7% |
| Millcreek | 62,205 | 5% |
Data: Census Bureau Population Estimates. The list covers cities, towns and census-designated places; where a city crosses into a neighboring county, only the part inside Salt Lake County is counted.
What stands out
Salt Lake County is an affluent market by U.S. standards: a median household income of $94,013 puts it above 91% of counties. Affluent customers tend to research before they call, so the ad is only the first step; the page behind it has to earn trust quickly.
Salt Lake County has 1,185,813 residents, which ranks 39th of 3,143 U.S. counties; its population has moved 0% since the 2020 Census.
No single place dominates Salt Lake County: the largest, Salt Lake City, holds about 18% of residents. Larger places include Salt Lake City (209,593), West Valley City (134,470), West Jordan (114,908), Sandy (91,943) and South Jordan (84,528). Each is a market of its own, and we set campaigns up around the ones you serve.
Who you are bidding against
Category by category, this table sets Salt Lake County against the typical U.S. county: the count per 10,000 residents, the change over time, and how many locations are larger operations.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which is not the same as active advertisers. How we calculate this
The most crowded category in Salt Lake County is real estate agents and brokers: 1,255 locations, 4.3x what a typical county has per resident, and up 19.2% since 2017. Law offices (727 locations, 2.1x) and dentists (624 locations, 1.9x) also sit above a normal county. General automotive repair is the least crowded category here at 0.8x typical (232 locations), so a campaign in that category is less likely to be drowned out.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 42.5% since 2017 to 493 locations. General automotive repair went the other way, down 12.1% to 232 locations. The biggest operators sit in physicians offices: 106 of 704 locations have 20 or more employees.
This describes who you are up against, not what a click will cost. Click costs come from keywords, ad quality, landing pages and timing, so read a crowded category as a reason to plan well and a quiet one as an opening, not a price quote.
Where demand is heading
Units authorized by building permits. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Salt Lake County authorized 10,649 housing units in 2021 and 7,167 in 2025, about 33% fewer; 2025 still works out to 60.4 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 79% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 4,249 against 4,086 a year earlier (+4%).
In Salt Lake County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are real estate agents and brokers (4.3x typical) and roofing contractors (1.9x typical). People moving into new homes need contractors, insurers, agents and providers, so construction-linked categories feel any swing in permits first. If that is your category, a change in permits is a cue to revisit your budget ahead of the busy stretch.

Arapahoe County, CO is the closest match, scoring 82 against Salt Lake County's 76.5. Fulton County, GA is the furthest from it, scoring 59.6. Hennepin County, MN builds far less per resident (29 against 60.4 permits per 10,000 residents) despite similar overall competition. If you already run ads in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.
The process
We put together your campaign with the groundwork done properly: landing pages made to convert, keywords, ads, extensions and conversion tracking for calls and forms.
After launch we keep tuning the account, adding negative keywords, adjusting bids and steering toward better leads.
We lean into the ad groups that are working and test wider keyword sets to build on the calls you already get.
The tuning never stops, and we lower your monthly management fee as your account grows, which improves your return.

Your break-even is your own. Type in what a new customer is worth to you and how many leads become customers, and you will see your break-even cost per lead, the customers needed to cover each month, and how your own cost-per-lead guess compares.
Common questions
The management fee is flat, $895 for one platform, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three, and it stays the same however large your ad budget is. Ad spend is paid to the platform, and you can cancel anytime.
Begin with your own economics, not a rule of thumb: the calculator above takes your profit per new customer and close rate and returns the most you can pay per lead. In Salt Lake County, real estate agents and brokers (4.3x) and law offices (2.1x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. Before launch we size the budget with you, then scale as results arrive.
More than most. Salt Lake County scores 76.5 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 136th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 47th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers is the densest category here, at 4.3 times the typical county. That is no reason to skip ads; targeting and landing pages simply matter more.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Salt Lake County are real estate agents and brokers (1,255), law offices (727) and physicians offices (704). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are real estate agents and brokers (4.3x) and law offices (2.1x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether ads work for you; it tells you how many other businesses may be bidding on the same searches.
Some campaigns produce calls the day they go live. Others take two to four weeks to settle in, more so in crowded categories like real estate agents and brokers. Early on, we check search terms and exclude the ones that do not fit, so your budget goes to the right clicks.
Salt Lake County has 1,185,813 residents, 0% since the 2020 Census, and 7,167 housing units were permitted in 2025 (60.4 per 10,000 residents). Because the population is close to flat, most new customers already have a provider and need a reason to switch. Either way, ads reach the people searching now, which is why we watch these trends when we set budgets.
Yes. We can target by city (Salt Lake City, West Valley City, West Jordan, Sandy and others), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location.
Absolutely. We manage Google Ads, Bing (Microsoft Advertising) and Meta, Facebook and Instagram's parent company. Many Salt Lake County businesses begin with Google, since people there are actively searching, and add Facebook and Instagram ads to reach people who are not searching yet. Pricing steps up by the number of platforms, not by the size of your ad budget.
No contract: month to month, cancel anytime. A dedicated account manager runs your account, and each month you get a report of the calls, form fills and sales your Salt Lake County campaign generated.
