Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsIt pays to know the field before you spend on ads in Mecklenburg County. Mecklenburg County has more large local competitors than most counties. GetPhound handles Google Ads for local businesses on flat monthly plans with no contracts, and the numbers below are where we would start building yours.
The market in numbers
Ad Competition Index
69.6/ 100
Sitting at rank 258 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 103 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. See the method
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (such as lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for the same customers. Mecklenburg County scores 69.6, which is more crowded than most.
Two features set Mecklenburg County apart from the pack: it is a county with an unusually high share of bigger (20+ employee) businesses in ad-heavy categories, and it is a county where new home permits are slowing this year. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Each bar places Mecklenburg County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.

| Cornelius | 33,139 | 3% |

What stands out
Competition in Mecklenburg County skews bigger than in most counties. Of 6,117 employer locations in the twelve ad-heavy categories we track (2022 data), 8.1% have 20 or more employees, a higher share than 95% of counties. Locations that size are the ones most likely to have someone in charge of marketing and to keep ads running all year, so a small Mecklenburg County business often bids against a much bigger one.
Mecklenburg County has 1,163,701 residents, which ranks 40th of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of +4.3% since the 2020 Census.
The biggest places in Mecklenburg County are Charlotte (911,311), Huntersville (64,688), Cornelius (33,139), Matthews (30,934) and Mint Hill (27,815). Some of these cities extend into neighboring counties, so the numbers are the portion inside this county. Targeting can follow cities, ZIP codes or a radius around your location, so a business on one side of the county is not paying for clicks from the other.
Your competition
Here is how Mecklenburg County stacks up against the typical U.S. county in each category: locations per 10,000 residents, how that has changed, and how many locations are larger operations.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which is not the same as active advertisers. See the method
In Mecklenburg County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most crowded, with 1,427 locations at 4.9 times the typical density; the count is up 44.6% since 2017. Law offices (670 locations, 2.0x) and accounting and CPA firms (267 locations, 1.9x) also sit above a normal county. At the other end, the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors category (291 locations) is below typical density at 0.8x, which can mean more room to win a strong position.
Real estate agents and brokers is also the fastest-growing category, up 44.6% since 2017, so the crowding is still building. The biggest operators sit in physicians offices: 160 of 789 locations have 20 or more employees.
This describes who you are up against, not what a click will cost. Click costs come from keywords, ad quality, landing pages and timing, so a crowded category calls for careful planning and a quiet one is an opening, not a quote.
Markets like this one
We matched Mecklenburg County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on size, income, growth, construction and ad competition.
| Place | Index | People | Change since 2020 | Ad-business change since 2017 | Permits per 10k, 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mecklenburg County, NC (this market) | 69.6 | 1,163,701 | +4.3% | +18.1% | 64.4 |
| Travis County, TX | 65.9 | 1,334,961 | +3.5% | +16.7% | 108.4 |
| Wake County, NC | 69.6 | 1,190,275 | +5.4% | +12.7% | 115.5 |
| Fulton County, GA | 59.6 | 1,079,105 | +1.2% | +10.9% | 86.3 |
| Salt Lake County, UT | 76.5 | 1,185,813 | 0% | +7.3% | 60.4 |
| El Paso County, CO | 71.3 | 744,215 | +1.9% | +9.9% | 76.9 |
| Tarrant County, TX | 57.4 | 2,182,947 | +3.4% | +10.9% | 63.4 |
These are the six markets among our 400 that match this one most closely on size, income, growth, construction and ad-business density. Sources as above.
Travis County, TX is the closest match, scoring 65.9 against Mecklenburg County's 69.6. Tarrant County, TX is the furthest from it, scoring 57.4. Wake County, NC builds far more per resident (115.5 against 64.4 permits per 10,000 residents) despite similar overall competition. If you already advertise in one of these markets, the comparison tells you how similar the competitive field is, not what your results will be.
New construction
Housing units authorized by building permits. Source: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files; year-to-date comparison covers the same months in each year). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
Mecklenburg County authorized 14,435 housing units in 2023 and 7,496 in 2025, about 48% fewer; 2025 still works out to 64.4 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 82% of counties. From January through August, 3,159 units have been permitted, compared with 5,952 a year earlier (−46.9%).
In Mecklenburg County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are real estate agents and brokers (4.9x typical) and roofing contractors (1.6x typical). For businesses that serve new households, permits are an early warning: search demand usually follows a turn in permits, and your budget and ad schedule should follow it.

North Carolina rules for advertisers
A lawyer may not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services. The rule's own examples include statements likely to create an unjustified expectation about results and comparisons with other lawyers that cannot be factually substantiated. In practice, ad headlines like "#1 attorney" or "we win every case" are risky unless they can be substantiated.
North Carolina requires a general contractor license where the cost of the undertaking is $40,000 or more (G.S. 87-1; the threshold was raised from $30,000 by S.L. 2023-108). The Licensing Board's rule 21 NCAC 12A .0501 requires the license number on contracts and bids. Separate licensing boards cover electrical and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors, so an ad should never suggest a license the business does not hold.

Plain-language pointers to the rules named above, checked against the cited sources on October 16, 2026. Treat this as a starting point rather than legal advice, since rules change and apply to particular professions. Check with your licensing board or an attorney before relying on it.
Questions
Our management fee is flat: $895 a month for one platform, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three, with no long-term contract. You pay your ad spend directly to the platform, apart from our fee.
Begin with your own economics, not a rule of thumb: the calculator above takes your profit per new customer and close rate and returns the most you can pay per lead. In Mecklenburg County, real estate agents and brokers (4.9x) and law offices (2.0x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. We agree on a budget with you before launch and scale it as results come in.
More than most. Mecklenburg County scores 69.6 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 258th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 103rd of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers leads on density, at 4.9 times the typical county. 8.1% of the ad-heavy locations have 20 or more employees, so expect some larger bidders. Crowding does not rule ads out; targeting and landing pages simply matter more.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Mecklenburg County are real estate agents and brokers (1,427), physicians offices (789) and law offices (670). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are real estate agents and brokers (4.9x) and law offices (2.0x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether ads will work for you; it tells you how many other businesses may be bidding on the same searches.
It varies. A few accounts get calls on day one; the rest need two to four weeks of tuning, notably in busy categories like real estate agents and brokers. Early on we review which searches triggered your ads and exclude the ones that do not fit your business.
Mecklenburg County has 1,163,701 residents, +4.3% since the 2020 Census, and 7,496 housing units were permitted in 2025 (64.4 per 10,000 residents). Population growth like that keeps bringing in people who have not chosen a provider yet. In both cases, ads reach whoever is searching right now, and that is why these trends inform the budgets we set.
Yes. We can target by city (Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Matthews and others), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location.
We do. On top of Google Ads, we run Bing ads and Meta ads, which run on Facebook and Instagram. Google usually comes first because searchers are ready to act; Bing adds a second search audience, and Facebook and Instagram reach people before they search. The fee depends on how many platforms you run: $895, $1,595 or $2,295 a month.
You can cancel anytime, because there is no contract. A dedicated account manager handles your campaign and sends monthly reports on the calls, forms and sales.
