Market snapshot
Ad Competition Index
50.1/ 100
Sitting at rank 875 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 300 of the 400 markets we cover. More local businesses chasing the same searches pushes the score up. How the index is built
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for its residents. Gaston County scores 50.1, which is near the middle of the pack.
Two things stand out: Gaston County is a county with an unusually high share of bigger (20+ employee) businesses in ad-heavy categories, and it is also a county with heavy new home construction for its size. The eight measures that follow place it among each other county.
Each bar sets Gaston County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Population by place
Place-by-place population from the latest Census Bureau estimates. A place is not a service area, but it shows where the largest pools of customers sit.
| City or town | Population (2023 estimate) | Slice of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Gastonia | 83,942 | 35% |
| Mount Holly | 18,373 | 8% |
| Belmont | 15,515 | 7% |
| Cherryville | 6,278 | 3% |
| Dallas | 6,156 | 3% |
| Bessemer City | 5,625 | 2% |

What shapes the market
A noticeable share of Gaston County's local advertisers are big. 7.2% of its 790 ad-heavy employer locations have 20 or more staff, more than in 91% of counties. That raises the bar on ad quality: tight targeting, strong landing pages and good conversion tracking count for more than budget alone.
Gaston County has 237,242 residents, which ranks 299th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its population has changed +4.1% since the 2020 Census.
No single place dominates Gaston County: the largest, Gastonia, holds about 35% of residents. Larger places include Gastonia (83,942), Mount Holly (18,373), Belmont (15,515), Cherryville (6,278) and Dallas (6,156). Each is a market of its own, and we set campaigns up around the ones you serve.
80,624 people, or 34% of residents, live outside any incorporated place. Radius and ZIP targeting reach them where city-only targeting would not.
Who else is in the auction
Category by category, this table sets Gaston County against the typical U.S. county: how many locations there are per 10,000 residents, how that count has moved, and how many are bigger operations.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not active advertisers. See the method
In Gaston County, the physicians offices category is the most crowded, with 137 locations at 1.4 times the typical density; the count is up 2.2% since 2017. Electrical contractors (66 locations, 1.2x) and landscaping services (90 locations, 1.2x) also sit above a normal county. At the other end, the insurance agencies and brokerages category (69 locations) is below typical density at 0.8x, which can mean more room to win a strong position.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 63.9% since 2017 to 59 locations. General automotive repair went the other way, down 3% to 65 locations. The biggest operators sit in physicians offices: 36 of 137 locations have 20 or more employees.
A word of caution: the table counts local businesses; it does not price clicks. Click prices are set in an auction that also depends on your keywords, ads, landing page and the exact search, so a crowded category is a reason to plan carefully, not a price.
Comparable counties
We matched Gaston County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, growth, building activity and local ad competition.

| Alamance County, NC | 47.4 | 179,165 | +4.5% | +10.4% | 113.1 |
| Richmond, VA | 49.3 | 229,247 | +1.2% | -1.1% | 116.9 |
| Hawaii County, HI | 51.6 | 207,615 | +3.5% | +5.3% | 59.2 |

| Mohave County, AZ | 56.3 | 223,682 | +4.9% | +16.6% | 82.1 |
Look-alikes are the six counties in our 400-market set closest to this one on size, income, growth, construction and ad-business density. Same sources as above.
Alamance County, NC is the closest match, scoring 47.4 against Gaston County's 50.1. Pitt County, NC is the furthest from it, scoring 56.4. Tippecanoe County, IN builds far more per resident (210.8 against 98.8 permits per 10,000 residents) despite similar overall competition. Already advertising in one of these places? The comparison shows how similar the competition is; it does not predict your results.
Demand signal
New housing units authorized by building permits. Source: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). Keep in mind that permits are approvals, not completed homes.
Permits in Gaston County have held within a narrow range, 2,343 units in 2025 against 2,184 in 2021, or 98.8 per 10,000 residents, more than in 93% of counties. Permits for January through August total 1,583, versus 1,596 in the same months last year (−0.8%).
In Gaston County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are electrical contractors (1.2x typical) and landscaping services (1.2x typical). Each new household needs contractors, insurers, agents and providers, so construction-linked categories feel any swing in permits first. If that is your category, a shift in permits is worth acting on before the busy stretch begins.
What happens, in order
We put together your campaign the right way from day one: landing pages, keywords, ads, extensions and conversion tracking for calls and forms.
When the campaign goes live we watch it closely and adjust, adding negative keywords, adjusting bids and steering toward better leads.
We lean into the ad groups that are working and try wider keywords to grow your calls compared to before.
We never stop tuning, and we bring down your monthly management fee as your account grows, which improves your return.

North Carolina advertising rules
A lawyer may not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services. The rule's own examples include statements likely to create an unjustified expectation about results and comparisons with other lawyers that cannot be factually substantiated. In practice, ad headlines such as "#1 attorney" or "we win every case" are risky unless they can be substantiated.
North Carolina requires a general contractor license where the cost of the undertaking is $40,000 or more (G.S. 87-1; the threshold was raised from $30,000 by S.L. 2023-108). The Licensing Board's rule 21 NCAC 12A .0501 requires the license number on contracts and bids. Separate licensing boards cover electrical and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors, so an ad should never suggest a license the business does not hold.

We summarized the rules above in plain language and checked each against its source on October 16, 2026. This is not legal advice: rules change, and they apply to particular professions and situations. Check with your licensing board or an attorney before relying on it.
FAQ
We charge a flat monthly management fee based on how many platforms we run: $895 for one, $1,595 for two, $2,295 for three. There is no contract, and your ad budget is paid directly to the ad platform.
Start from your own economics rather than a rule of thumb: the calculator above takes your profit per new customer and close rate and returns the most you can pay per lead. In Gaston County, physicians offices (1.4x) and electrical contractors (1.2x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. We agree on a budget with you before launch and scale it as results come in.
About average. Gaston County scores 50.1 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 875th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 300th of the 400 markets we cover. Physicians offices is the densest category here, at 1.4 times the typical county. That is a reason to be consistent: steady campaigns can claim ground that would be contested in a bigger market.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Gaston County are physicians offices (137), landscaping services (90) and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (88). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are physicians offices (1.4x) and electrical contractors (1.2x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether ads will work for you; it shows how many other businesses may be bidding on the same searches.
There is no single answer. A few accounts get calls on day one; the rest need two to four weeks of tuning, especially in busy categories like physicians offices. We check the searches that triggered your ads early and exclude those that do not suit your business.
Gaston County has 237,242 residents, +4.1% since the 2020 Census, and 2,343 housing units were permitted in 2025 (98.8 per 10,000 residents). Growth at that pace keeps adding people who have not picked a provider yet. Either way, ads reach the people searching now, so we keep an eye on these trends when we set budgets.
Yes. We can target by city (Gastonia, Mount Holly, Belmont, Cherryville and others), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location. Around 34% of residents live outside any incorporated place, which is where radius targeting helps.
We do. In addition to Google Ads, we handle Bing ads and Meta ads, which run on Facebook and Instagram. Google tends to be the first platform because searchers are ready to act; Bing adds a second search audience and Facebook and Instagram let you reach people before they search. Pricing follows the platform count: $895, $1,595 or $2,295 a month.
You can cancel anytime, since there is no contract. You work with one dedicated account manager and get monthly reporting on the calls, forms and sales your campaign produces.
