Snapshot
Ad Competition Index
82.5/ 100
Sitting at rank 71 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 26 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for its residents. Sonoma County scores 82.5, which is among the most crowded markets in the country.
What defines Sonoma County is not the score alone. It is a high-income county, and it is a county with unusually many ad-heavy local businesses for its size. The eight measures below show how it compares with every other county.
Each bar sets Sonoma County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Population by place
These are the largest places in Sonoma County by resident count. We can target any of these places, or ZIP codes and a radius around where you work.
| City or town | People (2023 estimate) | Percent of the county |
|---|---|---|
| Santa Rosa | 175,845 | 36% |
| Petaluma | 58,800 | 12% |
| Rohnert Park | 44,546 | 9% |
| Windsor | 25,828 | 5% |
| Healdsburg | 11,137 | 2% |
| Sonoma | 10,619 | 2% |
Data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates. A place is a city, town or census-designated place; where a city spills into a neighboring county, just the portion inside Sonoma County is counted.
Market profile
Sonoma County is an affluent market by U.S. standards: a median household income of $100,157 puts it above 93% of counties. Affluent customers tend to research before they call, so the ad is only the first step; the page behind it has to earn trust quickly.
Sonoma County has 481,812 residents, which ranks 152nd of 3,143 U.S. counties; its population has moved −1.4% since the 2020 Census.
No single place dominates Sonoma County: the largest, Santa Rosa, holds about 36% of residents. Larger places include Santa Rosa (175,845), Petaluma (58,800), Rohnert Park (44,546), Windsor (25,828) and Healdsburg (11,137). Each one of them is its own market, so we build the campaign around the places you serve.
27% of residents (131,402 people) live outside any incorporated place. Radius and ZIP targeting reach them where city-only targeting would not.
Your competition
For each category we divide employer locations by population and compare the result with the median county. A reading of 2.0x means two times the locations per resident that a typical county has.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which is not the same as active advertisers. How we calculate this
The most crowded category in Sonoma County is residential remodelers: 481 locations, 3.3x what a typical county has per resident, and up 19.1% since 2017. Electrical contractors (238 locations, 2.2x) and roofing contractors (60 locations, 2.1x) also sit above a normal county. Insurance agencies and brokerages is the least crowded category here at 1.0x typical (170 locations), so a campaign in that category is less likely to be drowned out.
Electrical contractors grew fastest, up 31.5% since 2017 to 238 locations. Law offices went the other way, down 11.1% to 248 locations.
One caution: this shows how many local businesses exist, not what a click costs. Click prices are set in an auction that also depends on your keywords, ads, landing page and the exact search, so a crowded category should shape your plan, not your expectations of price.
Housing demand
New housing units authorized by building permits. Data: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual county files, with the year-to-date bars covering the same months in each year). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
Sonoma County authorized 2,618 housing units in 2021 and 1,682 in 2025, about 36% fewer; 2025 still works out to 34.9 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 59% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 747 against 721 a year earlier (+3.6%).
In Sonoma County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are residential remodelers (3.3x typical) and electrical contractors (2.2x typical). Every new household needs contractors, insurers, agents and providers, so categories tied to construction feel a swing in permits first. If that is your category, a turn in permits is a reason to review your budget before the busy stretch, not after.

The six look-alikes are the counties in our 400-market set that sit closest to this one on size, income, growth, construction and ad-business density. Sources as above.
Santa Barbara County, CA is the closest match, scoring 77.9 against Sonoma County's 82.5. Kane County, IL is the furthest from it, scoring 76.2. Santa Barbara County, CA's ad-heavy business base changed +2.7% over the period against +6.2% in Sonoma County. If you already advertise in one of these markets, the comparison tells you how similar the competitive field is, not what your results will be.
Our process
We set up your campaign from a strong base: conversion-ready landing pages, keywords, ads, ad extensions and conversion tracking for calls and forms.
Once ads are running, we review the account on a steady schedule, adding negative keywords, reworking bids and improving lead quality.
We lean into the ad groups that are working and test broader keywords to lift your call volume.
We never stop tuning, and we bring down your monthly management fee as your account grows, which lifts your return.

FAQ
Management is a flat monthly fee, $895 for one platform, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three, and it does not change with the size of your ad budget. Ad spend goes to the platform, and cancelling is always allowed.
Begin with your own economics, not a rule of thumb: the calculator above converts your profit per customer and close rate into the most you can pay per lead. In Sonoma County, residential remodelers (3.3x) and electrical contractors (2.2x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. We size the budget with you before launch and scale as results come in.
More than most. Sonoma County scores 82.5 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 71st of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 26th of the 400 markets we cover. Residential remodelers, at 3.3 times the typical county. That does not make ads a bad idea; it makes targeting and landing pages matter more.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Sonoma County are residential remodelers (481), landscaping services (306) and dentists (276). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are residential remodelers (3.3x) and electrical contractors (2.2x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether ads work for you; it only shows how many other businesses could be bidding on the same searches.
Some campaigns produce calls the day they go live. Others need two to four weeks to settle, more so in crowded categories such as residential remodelers. In the first weeks we review search terms and add negative keywords so your budget lands on the right clicks.
Sonoma County has 481,812 residents, −1.4% since the 2020 Census, and 1,682 housing units were permitted in 2025 (34.9 per 10,000 residents). A shrinking population means most new customers have to be won from competitors. Whichever way it goes, ads reach the people who are searching today, and that is why these trends inform the budgets we set.
Yes. We can target by city (Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Windsor and others), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location. Around 27% of residents live outside any incorporated place, which is where radius targeting helps.
We do. Paid ads management covers Google Ads, Bing (Microsoft Advertising) and Meta, Facebook and Instagram's parent company. Many Sonoma County businesses begin with Google, since people there are actively searching, and bring in Facebook and Instagram ads for people who have not started searching. Our fee rises with the number of platforms, never with your ad budget.
Everything is month to month with no contract. Your account has one dedicated manager, and each month you get a report of the calls, form fills and sales your Sonoma County campaign generated.
