The market in figures
Ad Competition Index
58.8/ 100
Ranked 553 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 225 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. See the method
We score every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (including lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for the same customers. Pima County scores 58.8, which is close to the middle of the pack.
What defines Pima County is not the score alone. It is a county with an unusually high share of bigger (20+ employee) businesses in ad-heavy categories, and it is a county with unusually many ad-heavy local businesses for its size. The eight measures that follow place it among every other county.
The bars place Pima County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Local context
Competition in Pima County skews larger than in most counties. Of 4,197 employer locations in the twelve ad-heavy categories we track (2022 data), 6.5% have 20 or more employees, a higher share than 88% of counties. Locations that size are the ones most likely to have someone in charge of marketing and to keep ads running all year, so a small Pima County business often bids against a much bigger one.
Pima County has 1,063,162 residents, which ranks 44th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its population has changed +1.9% since the 2020 Census.
Tucson dominates Pima County, with about 51% of its residents. The other bigger places are Marana (58,430), Oro Valley (48,311), Sahuarita (36,356), South Tucson (4,521). We aim campaigns at the places and ZIP codes you serve, so you are not paying for clicks from places you do not serve.
35% of residents (368,305 people) live outside any incorporated place. Radius and ZIP targeting reach them where city-only targeting would not.
Where the customers are
These are the largest places in Pima County by resident count. You can aim a campaign at any of these places, or at ZIP codes and a radius around your location.
| Place name | People (2023 estimate) | Portion of county population |

| Tucson | 547,239 | 51% |
| Marana (part) | 58,430 | 5% |
| Oro Valley | 48,311 | 5% |
| Sahuarita | 36,356 | 3% |
| South Tucson | 4,521 | 0% |

Your competition
Each category's employer locations are divided by population and compared with the median county. A reading of 2.0x means double the locations per resident of a typical county.
Crowding = employer locations per 10,000 residents divided by the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a count of active advertisers. See the method
In Pima County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most crowded, with 707 locations at 2.7 times the typical density; the count is up 39.4% since 2017. Law offices (465 locations, 1.5x) and physicians offices (628 locations, 1.5x) also sit above a normal county. At the other end, the landscaping services category (277 locations) is below typical density at 0.8x, which can mean more room to win a strong position.
Roofing contractors grew fastest, up 40.7% since 2017 to 76 locations. Law offices went the other way, down 9% to 465 locations. The biggest operators sit in electrical contractors: 34 of 205 locations have 20 or more employees.
Remember that this is a headcount of businesses, not a price list. Click costs come out of an auction that cares about much more than how many rivals there are, so we build around your keywords, offer and landing page instead of the headcount.
Look-alike markets
We matched Pima County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, growth, construction and how crowded local advertising is.
| Place | Score | Residents | Population change since 2020 | Ad-business change since 2017 | Permits per 10k, 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pima County, AZ (this market) | 58.8 | 1,063,162 | +1.9% | +7.6% | 43.8 |
| New Haven County, CT | 62.3 | 863,700 | -0.1% | -0.8% | n/a |
| Kent County, MI | 64.4 | 661,354 | +0.5% | +6.7% | 37 |
| Duval County, FL | 71.7 | 1,030,822 | +3.5% | +11.1% | 58.3 |
| Jefferson County, KY | 66.2 | 772,144 | -1.4% | +3.6% | 38.9 |
| Hartford County, CT | 66.5 | 896,854 | -0.3% | +0.4% | n/a |
| Davidson County, TN | 59.6 | 712,334 | -0.5% | +8.7% | 79 |
These are the six markets among our 400 that match this one most closely on size, income, growth, construction and ad-business density. Sources as above.
New Haven County, CT is the closest match, scoring 62.3 against Pima County's 58.8. Duval County, FL is the furthest from it, scoring 71.7. Davidson County, TN builds far more per resident (79 against 43.8 permits per 10,000 residents) despite similar overall competition. If you already advertise in one of these markets, the comparison tells you how similar the competitive field is, not what your results will be.
Housing demand
Units authorized by building permits. Data: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files; year-to-date comparison covers the same months in each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Pima County authorized 6,284 housing units in 2021 and 4,658 in 2025, about 26% fewer; 2025 still works out to 43.8 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 68% of counties. Permits for January through August total 3,150, versus 2,969 in the same months last year (+6.1%).
In Pima County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are real estate agents and brokers (2.7x typical) and roofing contractors (1.2x typical). People moving into new homes need contractors, insurers, agents and providers, so construction-linked categories feel any swing in permits first. If you are in one of them, a change in permits is a cue to revisit your budget ahead of the busy stretch.
Do the math
Every business has a different break-even. Type in what a new customer is worth to you and how many leads become customers, and it will show your break-even cost per lead, the customers needed to cover each month, and how your own cost-per-lead guess compares.

One idea, many names
Paid ads, PPC, pay-per-click, Google Ads, Facebook ads, Instagram ads: it is one service, you pay per click, and we run it for Pima County businesses on a flat plan.
Most clients start with Google Ads, where intent is highest, and add Facebook and Instagram or Bing once the first campaign is working. One account manager runs all of them.
Our process
We put together your campaign on a solid foundation: pages built to turn clicks into calls, keywords, ads, ad extensions and call and form tracking.
Your campaign goes live and we optimize regularly, cutting wasted clicks with negative keywords, reworking bids and raising lead quality.
We lean into the ad groups that are working and try broader keywords to bring in more calls than before.
We keep optimizing and lower your monthly management fee as your account grows, so your return keeps rising.
What it costs
A single monthly management fee, month to month, priced by how many platforms we run for you. Your ad budget is separate and is paid directly to the platform. Planning a budget above $10K a month? Call us.
FAQ
Management is a flat fee: $895 a month for one platform, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three, and there is no long-term contract. You pay your ad spend directly to the platform, apart from our fee.
Work from your own numbers instead of a rule of thumb: the calculator above takes your profit per new customer and close rate and returns the most you can pay per lead. In Pima County, real estate agents and brokers (2.7x) and law offices (1.5x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. We size the budget with you before launch and scale as results come in.
About average. Pima County scores 58.8 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 553rd of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 225th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers leads on density, at 2.7 times the typical county. That calls for consistency: steady campaigns can take positions that would be fought over in a bigger market.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Pima County are real estate agents and brokers (707), physicians offices (628) and law offices (465). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are real estate agents and brokers (2.7x) and law offices (1.5x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether ads work for you; it shows how many other businesses may be bidding on the same searches.
It varies. Some accounts get calls the first day; others need two to four weeks of tuning, especially in busy categories like real estate agents and brokers. We check the searches that triggered your ads early and exclude those that do not suit your business.
Pima County has 1,063,162 residents, +1.9% since the 2020 Census, and 4,658 housing units were permitted in 2025 (43.8 per 10,000 residents). Because the population is close to flat, most new customers already have a provider and need a reason to switch. In both cases, ads reach whoever is searching right now, so we keep an eye on these trends when we set budgets.
Yes. We can target by city (Tucson, Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita and others), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location. About 35% of residents live outside any incorporated place, and radius targeting is frequently how we reach them.
Yes. Beyond Google Ads, we manage Bing ads and Meta ads, which run on Facebook and Instagram. Google tends to be the first platform because searchers are ready to act; Bing adds a second search audience, and Facebook and Instagram reach people before they search. You pay by platform count: $895, $1,595 or $2,295 a month.
No contract, and you can cancel anytime. One dedicated account manager runs your account, and each month you see the calls, forms and sales it produced.
