Market snapshot
Ad Competition Index
49.7/ 100
Rank 893 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 306 of the 400 markets we cover. Higher means more local businesses competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (such as lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for the same customers. Franklin County scores 49.7, which is near the middle of the pack.
What defines Franklin County is not the score alone. It is a county with an unusually high share of larger (20+ employee) businesses in ad-heavy categories, and it is a county with heavy new home construction for its size. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
The bars place Franklin County alongside all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
What shapes the market
A noticeable share of Franklin County's local advertisers are big. 10.7% of its 4,580 ad-heavy employer locations have 20 or more staff, more than in 99% of counties. That raises the bar on ad quality: tight targeting, strong landing pages and good conversion tracking count for more than budget alone.
Franklin County has 1,326,063 residents, which ranks 32nd of 3,143 U.S. counties, and the headcount has shifted +0.2% since the 2020 Census.
Columbus dominates Franklin County, with about 67% of its residents in the county portion. The other larger places are Grove City (42,782), Dublin (40,229), Hilliard (37,262), Upper Arlington (35,743). We build campaigns around the places and ZIP codes you serve, so you pay for clicks from the areas you want.
Where the customers are
These are the largest places in Franklin County by resident count. We can target any of these places, or ZIP codes and a radius around where you work.

| Dublin (part) | 40,229 | 3% |

Data: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates. A place is a city, town or census-designated place; where a city crosses into a neighboring county, only the part inside Franklin County is counted.
The field you are bidding in
Category by category, this table sets Franklin County against the typical U.S. county: how many locations there are per 10,000 residents, how that count has moved, and how many are larger operations.
Crowding is employer locations per 10,000 residents relative to the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Counts are establishments from County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a count of active advertisers. Method
The most crowded category in Franklin County is real estate agents and brokers: 597 locations, 1.8x what a typical county has per resident, and up 53.9% since 2017. Law offices (681 locations, 1.8x) and dentists (542 locations, 1.5x) also sit above a normal county. Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors is the least crowded category here at 0.5x typical (232 locations), so a campaign in that category is less likely to be drowned out.
Roofing contractors grew fastest, up 57.6% since 2017 to 93 locations. Accounting and CPA firms went the other way, down 11.1% to 209 locations. The biggest operators sit in plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors: 59 of 232 locations have 20 or more employees.
One caution: these are counts of local businesses, not click prices. What a click costs comes from an auction shaped by your keywords, ads, landing page and the exact search, so a crowded category is a reason to plan carefully, not a price.
Look-alike markets
We matched Franklin County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, growth, building activity and local ad competition.
| Place | Score | Population | Population change since 2020 | Ad-business change since 2017 | Permits per 10k, 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Franklin County, OH (this page) | 49.7 | 1,326,063 | +0.2% | +5.7% | 79.1 |
| Tarrant County, TX | 57.4 | 2,182,947 | +3.4% | +10.9% | 63.4 |
| Jackson County, MO | 60.7 | 718,560 | +0.2% | +0.9% | 56.1 |
| Fulton County, GA | 59.6 | 1,079,105 | +1.2% | +10.9% | 86.3 |
| Dallas County, TX | 62.6 | 2,606,358 | -0.2% | +2.7% | 47.4 |
| Davidson County, TN | 59.6 | 712,334 | -0.5% | +8.7% | 79 |
| Dane County, WI | 55.4 | 575,347 | +2.5% | +6.1% | 116 |
Look-alikes are the six counties in our 400-market set closest to this one on size, income, growth, construction and ad-business density. Sources as above.
Tarrant County, TX is the closest match, scoring 57.4 against Franklin County's 49.7. Dallas County, TX is the furthest from it, scoring 62.6. Dane County, WI builds far more per resident (116 against 79.1 permits per 10,000 residents) despite similar overall competition. If you already advertise in one of these markets, the comparison tells you how similar the competitive field is, not what your results will be.
Housing demand
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (county annual files, and the year-to-date bars compare the same months each year). Permits are authorizations, not completed homes.
Housing permits in Franklin County rose from 6,652 units in 2021 to 10,493 in 2025 (+58%), or 79.1 per 10,000 residents, more than in 88% of counties. From January through August, 6,077 units have been permitted, compared with 7,723 a year earlier (−21.3%).
In Franklin County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are real estate agents and brokers (1.8x typical) and roofing contractors (1.2x typical). If you serve new households, watch permits as an early signal: search demand usually follows a turn in permits, and your budget and ad schedule should follow it.
Run your own numbers
Break-even is different for every business. Type in what a new customer is worth to you and how many leads become customers, and you will see the most you can pay per lead, how many customers cover your monthly cost, and how that compares with the cost per lead you expect.

Same idea, different names
People say Google Ads, PPC, paid ads, Facebook ads or Instagram ads; all of them mean paying per click, and we manage that for Franklin County businesses on one flat plan.
Start with the platform your customers use most. Many Franklin County businesses begin with Google Ads and later add Facebook and Instagram to stay in front of people who have not searched yet. We manage Google, Bing and Meta (Facebook and Instagram) together under one account manager.
Step by step
We assemble your campaign starting with the basics done right: landing pages made to convert, keywords, ads, ad extensions and conversion tracking.
Your campaign goes live and we optimize regularly, blocking poor-fit searches with negative keywords, refining bids and improving lead quality.
We lean into the ad groups that are working and try wider keywords to bring in more calls than before.
The tuning never stops, and we lower your monthly management fee as your account grows, which improves your return.
Fees
One flat monthly fee, with nothing to sign, scaled to the number of platforms we manage. Your ad budget is separate and is paid directly to the platform. Spending more than $10K a month on ads? Call us.
Questions
We charge a flat monthly management fee based on how many platforms we run: $895 for one, $1,595 for two, $2,295 for three. There is no contract, and your ad budget is paid directly to the ad platform.
Start from your own economics rather than a rule of thumb: the calculator above converts your profit per customer and close rate into the most you can pay per lead. In Franklin County, real estate agents and brokers (1.8x) and law offices (1.8x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. Before launch we size the budget with you, then scale as results arrive.
About average. Franklin County scores 49.7 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 893rd of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 306th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers, at 1.8 times the typical county. 10.7% of the ad-heavy locations have 20 or more employees, so expect some bigger bidders. That is a reason to be consistent: steady campaigns can claim ground that would be contested in a larger market.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Franklin County are physicians offices (713), law offices (681) and real estate agents and brokers (597). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are real estate agents and brokers (1.8x) and law offices (1.8x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether ads work for you; it only shows how many other businesses could be bidding on the same searches.
Some campaigns produce calls the day they go live. Some need a two-to-four-week settling period, particularly in busy categories like real estate agents and brokers. We review search terms and add negative keywords in the first weeks so your budget goes to the right clicks.
Franklin County has 1,326,063 residents, +0.2% since the 2020 Census, and 10,493 housing units were permitted in 2025 (79.1 per 10,000 residents). With little population change, new customers are mostly people who already have a provider and must be given a reason to switch. In both cases, ads reach whoever is searching right now, so we keep an eye on these trends when we set budgets.
Yes. We can target by city (Columbus, Grove City, Dublin, Hilliard and others), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location.
Absolutely. Our paid ads management covers Google Ads, Bing (Microsoft Advertising) and Meta, Facebook and Instagram's parent company. Most Franklin County clients start on Google, where people are actively searching, and layer on Facebook and Instagram ads to reach people before they search. You pay by the number of platforms, not by the size of your ad budget.
No contract: month to month, cancel anytime. A dedicated account manager runs your account, and you receive monthly numbers on the calls, form fills and sales from your Franklin County campaign.
