The market in numbers
Ad Competition Index
87.9/ 100
Ranked 25 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 5 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We grade every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (like lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for the same customers. DuPage County scores 87.9, which is among the most crowded markets in the country.
What defines DuPage County is not the score alone. It is a county with unusually many ad-heavy local businesses for its size, and it is a high-income county. Eight measures below show where it stands among all counties.
Each bar places DuPage County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Source data: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Market profile
Crowded is the right word for DuPage County. There are 64.6 ad-heavy employer locations per 10,000 residents, a denser field than 96% of counties. When so many local businesses compete, a generic ad disappears; a specific offer, a clear service area and strong reviews do not.
DuPage County has 921,213 residents, which ranks 60th of 3,143 U.S. counties; its population has moved −1.3% since the 2020 Census.
No single place dominates DuPage County: the largest, Naperville, holds about 11% of residents. Larger places include Naperville (98,532), Wheaton (52,938), Aurora (50,723), Downers Grove (49,706) and Elmhurst (45,327). Each one of them is its own market, so we build the campaign around the places you serve.
Who else is in the auction
Category by category, this table sets DuPage County against the typical U.S. county: the count per 10,000 residents, the change over time, and how many locations are larger operations.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not active advertisers. See the method
In DuPage County, the dentists category is the most crowded, with 717 locations at 2.8 times the typical density; the count is down 0.4% since 2017. Accounting and CPA firms (304 locations, 2.7x) and real estate agents and brokers (583 locations, 2.5x) also sit above a normal county.
Roofing contractors grew fastest, up 40% since 2017 to 112 locations. Physicians offices went the other way, down 8.7% to 806 locations. The biggest operators sit in electrical contractors: 41 of 290 locations have 20 or more employees.
One caution: the table counts local businesses; it does not price clicks. Auctions set click prices, and they also depend on your keywords, ads, landing page and the exact search, so a crowded category should shape your plan, not your expectations of price.
Comparable counties
Among our 400 markets, these six look most like DuPage County, judged on size, income, growth, construction and ad-business density together.

Lake County, IL is the closest match, scoring 79.7 against DuPage County's 87.9. Kane County, IL is the furthest from it, scoring 76.2. Waukesha County, WI's ad-heavy business base changed +8.5% over the period against +1.5% in DuPage County. Already advertising in one of these places? The comparison shows how similar the competition is; it does not predict your results.
Housing demand
New homes authorized by building permits. Source: the U.S. Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
DuPage County authorized 1,554 housing units in 2021 and 1,207 in 2025, about 22% fewer; 2025 still works out to 13.1 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 75% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 754 against 903 a year earlier (−16.5%).
In DuPage County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are real estate agents and brokers (2.5x typical) and residential remodelers (2.5x typical). For businesses that serve new households, permits are an early warning: search demand usually follows a turn in permits, and your budget and ad schedule should follow it.

Try your own numbers
Every business has a different break-even. Enter what a new customer is worth to you and how often a lead becomes one, and it will show your break-even cost per lead, the customers needed to cover each month, and how your own cost-per-lead guess compares.
Step by step
We construct your campaign starting with the basics done right: landing pages, keywords, ads, extensions and call and form tracking.
When the campaign goes live we watch it closely and adjust, adding negative keywords, adjusting bids and lifting lead quality.
We back the ad groups that are producing and test wider keyword sets to bring in more calls than before.
Optimization continues, and we reduce your monthly management fee as your account grows, which lifts your return.

We charge a flat monthly management fee based on how many platforms we run: $895 for one, $1,595 for two, $2,295 for three. There is no contract, and your ad budget is paid directly to the ad platform.
Begin with your own economics, not a rule of thumb: the calculator above converts your profit per customer and close rate into the most you can pay per lead. In DuPage County, dentists (2.8x) and accounting and CPA firms (2.7x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. Before launch we size the budget with you, then scale as results arrive.
More than most. DuPage County scores 87.9 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 25th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 5th of the 400 markets we cover. Dentists is the densest category here, at 2.8 times the typical county. That is no reason to skip ads; it makes targeting and landing pages matter more.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in DuPage County are physicians offices (806), dentists (717) and residential remodelers (694). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are dentists (2.8x) and accounting and CPA firms (2.7x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether ads work for you; it tells you how many other businesses may be bidding on the same searches.
Timing varies. Some accounts hear the phone ring on day one, and others need two to four weeks of tuning, especially in busy categories like dentists. Early on we review which searches triggered your ads and exclude the ones that do not fit your business.
DuPage County has 921,213 residents, −1.3% since the 2020 Census, and 1,207 housing units were permitted in 2025 (13.1 per 10,000 residents). When the population is slipping, new customers mostly have to come from competitors. Whichever way it goes, ads reach the people who are searching today, so we keep an eye on these trends when we set budgets.
Yes. We can target by city (Naperville, Wheaton, Aurora, Downers Grove and others), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location. Roughly 10% of residents live outside any incorporated place, and radius targeting is frequently how we reach them.
Yes, we do. On top of Google Ads, we run Bing ads and Meta ads, which run on Facebook and Instagram. Google tends to be the first platform since searchers are ready to act; Bing gives you a second search audience while Facebook and Instagram reach people ahead of their search. Pricing follows the platform count: $895, $1,595 or $2,295 a month.
You can cancel anytime, because there is no contract. One dedicated account manager runs your account, and each month you see the calls, forms and sales it produced.
