Snapshot
Ad Competition Index
48.8/ 100
Rank 928 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 314 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How the score works
We score every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (like lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for its residents. Johnston County scores 48.8, which is close to the middle of the pack.
What defines Johnston County is not the score alone. It is a county where the number of ad-heavy local businesses has been climbing fast, and it is one of the faster-growing counties in the country. The eight measures below show how it compares with each other county.
Each bar places Johnston County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Census income estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Communities
The Census Bureau's latest estimates, by place. A place is not a service area, but it shows where the largest pools of customers sit.
| City or town | Population (2023 est.) | Portion of county population |
|---|---|---|
| Clayton (part) | 30,216 | 12% |
| Smithfield | 12,468 | 5% |
| Selma | 7,012 | 3% |
| Archer Lodge | 5,365 | 2% |
| Benson (part) | 4,401 | 2% |
| Wilson's Mills | 2,820 | 1% |
Data: Census Bureau Population Estimates. A place is a city, town or census-designated place; where a city extends into a neighboring county, we count only the part that lies in Johnston County.
What shapes the market
The field in Johnston County is getting more crowded. The number of employer locations in the twelve ad-heavy categories we track grew 23.2% from 2017 to 2022, faster than 91% of counties, to 771. New competitors keep arriving, so a campaign that was good enough a few years ago may not hold position today.
Johnston County has 241,955 residents, which ranks 293rd of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its population has changed +12% since the 2020 Census.
No single place dominates Johnston County: the largest, Clayton, holds about 12% of residents. Larger places include Clayton (30,216), Smithfield (12,468), Selma (7,012), Archer Lodge (5,365) and Benson (4,401). Each one of them is its own market, so we build the campaign around the places you serve.
71% of residents (171,456 people) live outside any incorporated place. Radius and ZIP targeting reach them where city-only targeting would not.
The field you are bidding in
For each category we divide employer locations by population and compare the result with the median county. A reading of 2.0x means double the locations per resident of a typical county.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not active advertisers. Method
The most crowded category in Johnston County is electrical contractors: 91 locations, 1.7x what a typical county has per resident, and up 42.2% since 2017. Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (127 locations, 1.6x) and real estate agents and brokers (87 locations, 1.4x) also sit above a normal county. Physicians offices is the least crowded category here at 0.5x typical (52 locations), so a campaign in that category is less likely to be drowned out.
Real estate agents and brokers grew fastest, up 93.3% since 2017 to 87 locations. Physicians offices went the other way, down 18.7% to 52 locations. The biggest operators sit in physicians offices: 11 of 52 locations have 20 or more employees.
Keep this in mind: these are counts of local businesses, not click prices. What a click costs comes from an auction shaped by your keywords, ads, landing page and the exact search, so a crowded category is a reason to plan carefully, not a price.
Look-alike markets
We matched Johnston County to the six markets in our 400-market set that look most like it on population, income, growth, construction and how crowded local advertising is.
| County | Index | People | Change since 2020 | Ad-business change since 2017 | Permits per 10k, 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Johnston County, NC (you are here) | 48.8 | 241,955 | +12% | +23.2% | 124.1 |
| Sussex County, DE | 52.6 | 263,509 | +11% | +11.1% | 147.4 |
| Osceola County, FL | 43.6 | 437,784 | +12.6% | +32.4% | 168.3 |
| Berkeley County, SC | 35 | 255,217 | +11% | +41.6% | 90.1 |

| Johnson County, TX | 50.8 | 202,906 | +12.7% | +27.4% | 118 |
| Santa Rosa County, FL | 42.1 | 203,162 | +8.1% | +24.3% | 93.5 |
Look-alikes are the six counties in our 400-market set closest to this one on size, income, growth, construction and ad-business density. Sources are listed above.
Sussex County, DE is the closest match, scoring 52.6 against Johnston County's 48.8. Berkeley County, SC is the furthest from it, scoring 35. Osceola County, FL builds far more per resident (168.3 against 124.1 permits per 10,000 residents) despite similar overall competition. If you already run ads in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.
Where demand is heading
New homes authorized by building permits. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (county annual files, and the year-to-date bars compare the same months each year). A permit is an authorization, not a finished home.
Johnston County authorized 3,520 housing units in 2021 and 3,002 in 2025, about 15% fewer; 2025 still works out to 124.1 units per 10,000 residents, more than in 97% of counties. For January through August, permits are running at 1,908 against 2,080 a year earlier (−8.3%).
In Johnston County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are roofing contractors (2.7x typical) and electrical contractors (1.7x typical). If you serve new households, watch permits as an early signal: search demand usually follows a turn in permits, and your budget and ad schedule should follow it.
How it works
We construct your campaign from a strong base: landing pages, keywords, ads, ad extensions and call and form tracking.
After launch we keep tuning the account, adding negative keywords, reworking bids and steering toward better leads.
We focus on the high-performing ad groups and test wider keyword sets to build on the calls you already get.
Optimization continues, and we reduce your monthly management fee as your account grows, so your return keeps rising.
Paid ads beyond Google
Google search
Your business at the top of Google when someone in Johnston County searches for what you sell. You pay only for clicks.
Meta ads
Campaigns on Facebook and Instagram, managed in Meta's ad platform, that reach Johnston County residents before they start searching.
Bing and Microsoft
Another pool of searchers on Bing, Microsoft Edge and Microsoft's partner network, many of whom never open Google.
Same idea, different names
People say Google Ads, PPC, paid ads, Facebook ads or Instagram ads; all of them mean paying per click, and we manage that for Johnston County businesses on one flat plan.
Intent is highest on Google, so most Johnston County businesses begin there and add Facebook, Instagram or Bing when the first campaign is running well. One account manager covers every platform.
Fees
One flat monthly fee, no contracts, scaled to the number of platforms we manage. Your ad budget is separate and is paid directly to the platform. Budget over $10K a month? Reach out.
Do the math
Break-even is different for every business. Enter what a new customer is worth to you and how often a lead becomes one, and you will see the most you can pay per lead, how many customers cover your monthly cost, and how that compares with the cost per lead you expect.
North Carolina ad rules
A lawyer may not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services. The rule's own examples include statements likely to create an unjustified expectation about results and comparisons with other lawyers that cannot be factually substantiated. In practice, ad headlines such as "#1 attorney" or "we win every case" are risky unless they can be substantiated.
North Carolina requires a general contractor license where the cost of the undertaking is $40,000 or more (G.S. 87-1; the threshold was raised from $30,000 by S.L. 2023-108). The Licensing Board's rule 21 NCAC 12A .0501 requires the license number on contracts and bids. Separate licensing boards cover electrical and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors, so an ad should never suggest a license the business does not hold.

We summarized the rules above in plain language and checked each against its source on October 16, 2026. Rules change, and which ones apply depends on your profession and situation; this is not legal advice. Your licensing board or attorney has the final word.
Questions we hear
We charge a flat management fee: $895 a month for one platform, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three, with no long-term contract. Your ad spend is separate and goes straight to Google (or Bing or Meta).
Work from your own numbers instead of a rule of thumb: the calculator above turns your profit per new customer and your close rate into the most you can pay per lead. In Johnston County, electrical contractors (1.7x) and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (1.6x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. We agree on a budget with you before launch and scale it as results come in.
About average. Johnston County scores 48.8 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 928th of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 314th of the 400 markets we cover. Electrical contractors, at 1.7 times the typical county. That rewards consistency: a steady campaign can hold ground that a larger market would contest.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Johnston County are plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (127), electrical contractors (91) and real estate agents and brokers (87). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are electrical contractors (1.7x) and plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors (1.6x). A large or crowded category does not settle whether ads will work for you; it tells you how many other businesses may be bidding on the same searches.
Some campaigns produce calls the day they go live. Others need two to four weeks to settle, especially in crowded categories such as electrical contractors. In the first weeks we review search terms and add negative keywords so your budget lands on the right clicks.
Johnston County has 241,955 residents, +12% since the 2020 Census, and 3,002 housing units were permitted in 2025 (124.1 per 10,000 residents). Growth at that pace keeps adding people who have not picked a provider yet. Whichever way it goes, ads reach the people who are searching today, and that is why these trends inform the budgets we set.
Yes. We can target by city (Clayton, Smithfield, Selma, Archer Lodge and others), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location. About 71% of residents live outside any incorporated place, and radius targeting is commonly how we reach them.
Yes. Paid ads management covers Google Ads, Bing (Microsoft Advertising) and Meta, Facebook and Instagram's parent company. Many Johnston County businesses begin with Google, since people there are actively searching, and add Facebook and Instagram ads to reach people who are not searching yet. You pay by the number of platforms, not by the size of your ad budget.
Everything is month to month with no contract. A dedicated account manager runs your account, and you receive monthly numbers on the calls, form fills and sales from your Johnston County campaign.
