Market snapshot
Ad Competition Index
58.9/ 100
Rank 552 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 224 of the 400 markets we cover. The higher the score, the more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How the index is built
We score every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (such as lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for its residents. Fairfax County scores 58.9, which is close to the middle of the pack.
Two features set Fairfax County apart from the pack: it is a county with an unusually high share of bigger (20+ employee) businesses in ad-heavy categories, and it is a high-income county. The eight measures below show how it compares with every other county.
The bars place Fairfax County against all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Data from: Census Bureau population estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Communities
Population by place, from the Census Bureau's latest estimates. A place is not a service area, but it shows where the largest pools of customers sit.

| Herndon (part) | 24,935 | 2% |
| Vienna | 16,306 | 1% |
| Clifton | 240 | 0% |
| Occoquan (part) | 0 | 0% |

What shapes the market
Look at who is bidding in Fairfax County and a pattern shows up: 7.7% of its 5,089 ad-heavy employer locations have 20 or more employees, a bigger share than 93% of counties. Bigger operators generally have marketing staff and steady budgets, so a smaller business wins by being more specific, more local and easier to call.
Fairfax County has 1,141,878 residents, which ranks 42nd of 3,143 U.S. counties, with population change of −0.7% since the 2020 Census.
The biggest places in Fairfax County are Herndon (24,935), Vienna (16,306), Clifton (240) and Occoquan (0). Some of these cities extend into neighboring counties, so the numbers are the portion inside this county. We target by city, ZIP code or a radius around your location, so a business on one side of the county is not paying for clicks from the other.
96% of residents (1,100,397 people) live outside any incorporated place. Radius and ZIP targeting reach them where city-only targeting would not.
Who else is in the auction
Here is how Fairfax County stacks up against the typical U.S. county in each category: how many locations there are per 10,000 residents, how that count has moved, and how many are larger operations.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). The counts are establishments in County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), which is not the same as active advertisers. See the method
In Fairfax County, the real estate agents and brokers category is the most crowded, with 734 locations at 2.6 times the typical density; the count is up 12.4% since 2017. Dentists (803 locations, 2.5x) and accounting and CPA firms (272 locations, 2.0x) also sit above a normal county. At the other end, the general automotive repair category (182 locations) is below typical density at 0.6x, which can mean more room to win a strong position.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 14.9% since 2017 to 626 locations. Accounting and CPA firms went the other way, down 8.4% to 272 locations. The biggest operators sit in landscaping services: 50 of 282 locations have 20 or more employees.
These are business counts, not ad costs. What a click costs is decided in an auction that depends on far more than how many competitors exist, which is why we build around your keywords, offer and landing page rather than the headcount alone.

Look-alikes are the six counties in our 400-market set closest to this one on size, income, growth, construction and ad-business density. Same sources as above.
Montgomery County, MD is the closest match, scoring 66.8 against Fairfax County's 58.9. Prince William County, VA is the furthest from it, scoring 49.2. Prince William County, VA's ad-heavy business base changed +13.8% over the period against +2.6% in Fairfax County. If you already run ads in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.
Demand signal
New homes authorized by building permits. Data: U.S. Census Bureau Building Permits Survey (county annual files; year-to-date comparison covers the same months in each year). Keep in mind that permits are approvals, not completed homes.
Permits in Fairfax County have held within a narrow range, 2,862 units in 2025 against 2,105 in 2021, or 25.1 per 10,000 residents, less than in 54% of counties. Permits for January through August total 2,612, versus 2,257 in the same months last year (+15.7%).
In Fairfax County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x typical) and residential remodelers (1.8x typical). New households need contractors, insurers, agents and providers, so categories tied to construction feel a swing in permits first. If you work in that space, a shift in permits is worth acting on before the busy stretch begins.
The process
We build your campaign with the groundwork done properly: pages built to turn clicks into calls, keywords, ads, extensions and call and form tracking.
With the campaign live, we check in and adjust often, blocking poor-fit searches with negative keywords, reworking bids and raising lead quality.
We back the ad groups that are producing and try wider keywords to grow your calls compared to before.
We never stop tuning, and we bring down your monthly management fee as your account grows, so your return keeps rising.

Questions
Management is a flat monthly fee, $895 for one platform, $1,595 for two and $2,295 for three, and it never rises with your ad budget. You pay ad spend to the platform, and you can cancel anytime.
Start from your own economics rather than a rule of thumb: the calculator above converts your profit per customer and close rate into the most you can pay per lead. In Fairfax County, real estate agents and brokers (2.6x) and dentists (2.5x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. We size the budget with you before launch and scale as results come in.
About average. Fairfax County scores 58.9 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 552nd of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 224th of the 400 markets we cover. Real estate agents and brokers, at 2.6 times the typical county. That rewards consistency: steady campaigns can take positions that would be fought over in a larger market.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in Fairfax County are dentists (803), physicians offices (789) and real estate agents and brokers (734). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are real estate agents and brokers (2.6x) and dentists (2.5x). A big or crowded category does not decide whether ads work for you; it shows how many other businesses may be bidding on the same searches.
It varies. Some accounts get calls the first day; others need two to four weeks of tuning, and more in crowded categories like real estate agents and brokers. Early on we review which searches triggered your ads and exclude the ones that do not fit your business.
Fairfax County has 1,141,878 residents, −0.7% since the 2020 Census, and 2,862 housing units were permitted in 2025 (25.1 per 10,000 residents). With the population close to flat, most new customers are people who already have a provider and have to be given a reason to switch. Either way, ads reach the people searching now, and that is why these trends inform the budgets we set.
Yes. We can target by city (Herndon, Vienna, Clifton, Occoquan), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location. Roughly 96% of residents live outside any incorporated place, and radius targeting is frequently how we reach them.
Yes. On top of Google Ads, we run Bing ads and Meta ads, which run on Facebook and Instagram. Google usually comes first because searchers are ready to act; Bing adds a second search audience and Facebook and Instagram let you reach people before they search. Pricing follows the platform count: $895, $1,595 or $2,295 a month.
You can cancel anytime, because there is no contract. One dedicated account manager runs your account, and each month you see the calls, forms and sales it produced.
