Snapshot
Ad Competition Index
50.9/ 100
Rank 841 of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and also 295 of the 400 markets we cover. A higher score means more local businesses are competing for the same searches. How we calculate it
We rate every U.S. county-equivalent with 20,000 or more residents on how many ad-heavy local businesses (including lawyers, dentists, contractors, agents and similar) compete for the same customers. DeKalb County scores 50.9, which is near the middle of the pack.
Two things stand out: DeKalb County is a county with an unusually high share of bigger (20+ employee) businesses in ad-heavy categories, and it is also a county where new home permits are slowing this year. Below, eight measures set it beside every other county.
Every bar compares DeKalb County among all 1,822 U.S. counties with 20,000 or more residents. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates, County Business Patterns (2017 and 2022), Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates and the Building Permits Survey.
Market profile
A noticeable share of DeKalb County's local advertisers are big. 4.9% of its 3,043 ad-heavy employer locations have 20 or more staff, more than in 77% of counties. That raises the bar on ad quality: tight targeting, strong landing pages and good conversion tracking count for more than budget alone.
DeKalb County has 762,992 residents, which ranks 88th of 3,143 U.S. counties, and its population has changed −0.2% since the 2020 Census.
The biggest places in DeKalb County are Stonecrest (60,677), Brookhaven (57,945), Dunwoody (51,713), Atlanta (40,966) and Tucker (36,975). Some of these cities extend into neighboring counties, so the figures are the portion inside this county. We can aim by city, by ZIP code or by a radius around your location, so clicks stay on the side of the county you actually serve.
419,989 people, or 55% of residents, live outside any incorporated place. Radius and ZIP targeting reach them where city-only targeting would not.
Your competition
For each category we divide employer locations by population and compare the result with the median county. A 2.0x reading means double the locations per resident of a typical county.
Crowding compares employer locations per 10,000 residents with the median U.S. county of 20,000+ residents (1.0x is typical; the dark tick marks it). Figures are establishments from the Census County Business Patterns (2017, 2022), not a count of active advertisers. Method
In DeKalb County, the law offices category is the most crowded, with 627 locations at 2.9 times the typical density; the count is up 10% since 2017. Real estate agents and brokers (533 locations, 2.8x) and accounting and CPA firms (146 locations, 1.6x) also sit above a normal county. At the other end, the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors category (119 locations) is below typical density at 0.5x, which can mean more room to win a strong position.
Residential remodelers grew fastest, up 43.4% since 2017 to 208 locations. Physicians offices went the other way, down 13.5% to 423 locations. The biggest operators sit in electrical contractors: 14 of 94 locations have 20 or more employees.
A word of caution: this shows how many local businesses exist, not what a click costs. Auctions set click prices, and they also depend on your keywords, ads, landing page and the exact search, so a crowded category is a reason to plan carefully, not a price.

Camden County, NJ is the closest match, scoring 57.3 against DeKalb County's 50.9. Erie County, NY is the furthest from it, scoring 60. Lehigh County, PA's ad-heavy business base changed −9.1% over the period against +6.5% in DeKalb County. If you already run ads in one of these markets, the comparison shows how alike the competition is, not what your results will be.
Where demand is heading
Units authorized by building permits. Source: the Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey (annual files by county, plus a year-to-date comparison of identical months). Permits count homes approved to be built, not homes completed.
DeKalb County authorized 2,862 housing units in 2021 and 1,312 in 2025, about 54% fewer; 2025 still works out to 17.2 units per 10,000 residents, less than in 68% of counties. Permits for January through August total 511, versus 684 in the same months last year (−25.3%).
In DeKalb County, the construction-linked categories already busiest are real estate agents and brokers (2.8x typical) and insurance agencies and brokerages (1.1x typical). For businesses that serve new households, permits are an early warning: search demand usually follows a turn in permits, and your budget and ad schedule should follow it.

What happens, in order
We put together your campaign starting with the basics done right: conversion-ready landing pages, keywords, ads, ad extensions and call and form tracking.
Your campaign goes live and we optimize regularly, blocking poor-fit searches with negative keywords, adjusting bids and steering toward better leads.
We lean into the ad groups that are working and test broader keywords so your calls keep growing.
We keep optimizing and lower your monthly management fee as your account grows, which lifts your return.

Work from your own figures instead of a rule of thumb: the calculator above takes your profit per new customer and close rate and returns the most you can pay per lead. In DeKalb County, law offices (2.9x) and real estate agents and brokers (2.8x) are denser than a typical county, so if you are in one of those categories plan for a busier auction. We size the budget with you before launch and scale as results come in.
About average. DeKalb County scores 50.9 on our Ad Competition Index, ranking 841st of 1,822 counties with 20,000+ residents and 295th of the 400 markets we cover. Law offices, at 2.9 times the typical county. That is a reason to be consistent: a steady campaign can hold ground that a bigger market would contest.
Across the twelve ad-heavy categories we track, the largest by employer locations in DeKalb County are law offices (627), real estate agents and brokers (533) and physicians offices (423). Measured against a typical county, the most crowded are law offices (2.9x) and real estate agents and brokers (2.8x). Size and crowding in a category do not decide whether ads work for you; it tells you how many other businesses may be bidding on the same searches.
Timing varies. Some accounts hear the phone ring on day one, and others need two to four weeks of tuning, more so in busy categories like law offices. At the start we look at which searches triggered your ads and cut the ones that do not fit your business.
DeKalb County has 762,992 residents, −0.2% since the 2020 Census, and 1,312 housing units were permitted in 2025 (17.2 per 10,000 residents). Because the population is near flat, most new customers already have a provider and need a reason to switch. Either way, ads reach the people searching now, which is why we watch these trends when we set budgets.
Yes. We can target by city (Stonecrest, Brookhaven, Dunwoody, Atlanta and others), by ZIP code or by a radius around your location. Roughly 55% of residents live outside any incorporated place, and radius targeting is frequently how we reach them.
We do. Beyond Google Ads, we manage Bing ads and Meta ads, which run on Facebook and Instagram. Google tends to be the first platform since searchers are ready to act; Bing adds a second search audience and Facebook and Instagram let you reach people before they search. The fee depends on how many platforms you run: $895, $1,595 or $2,295 a month.
There is no contract; you can cancel anytime. One dedicated account manager runs your account, and each month you see the calls, forms and sales it produced.
